DEVISER – un oscuro ritorno per evocare il male

Quest’anno sono tornati in pista i black metallers greci Deviser a distanza di ben 12 anni dal loro ultimo album. La band, capitanata da Nick Christogiannis e il fondatore Matt Hnaras, è pronta per il rilascio del nuovo album ‘Evil Summons Evil’ – che sarà disponibile dal 10 Febbraio prossimo tramite Hammerheart Records.

Ascoltando i Deviser sin dai tempi del loro debut album, ovviamente mi ha fatto un gran piacere verderli tornare sulle scene, ragion per cui ho approfittato della disponibilità della band per porre alcune domande. Del resto, dopo 12 anni di silenzio, c’è sicuramente qualcosa da dire… Di seguito la mia chiacchierata con un gentilissimo Matt!

Benvenuto su Suoni Distorti Magazine. Grazie per avermi concesso questa intervista. Come stai?

Ciao grazie a te! Al momento abbastanza impegnato per rispondere alle interviste e già sto lavorando su nuove canzoni!

La prima domanda che mi viene spontanea riguarda la vostra lunga assenza dalla scena musicale. Cosa è successo in questi ultimi anni?

Siamo rimasti delusi da questi membri che hanno preferito guardare alle loro vite personali invece di dedicarsi alla band. Non erano disposti a lavorare attivamente e sostanzialmente la band si sciolse per alcuni anni. Avevamo un album completo come demo del 2006, è stato davvero un grosso errore pubblicarlo nel 2011 su una piccolissima etichetta indipendente. Questo materiale era sperimentale e di certo non ci rappresenta. Abbiamo riattivato la band nel 2017, io e Nick, con l’uscita di un E.P. (“Howling Flames”) e videoclip (“Black Mass”) e poi le cose si sono fatte serie visto che le nuove composizioni suonavano diaboliche, come volevamo davvero.

12 anni dopo il vostro ultimo album (“Seasons of Darkness”, 2011), state per pubblicare il nuovo disco ‘Evil Summons Evil’ che uscirà il 10 febbraio 2023. Quali novità, se ci sono, per i fans dei Deviser?

L’album che uscirà a febbraio è davvero demoniaco e soddisferà i fan del metal oscuro e inquietante. Attualmente stiamo cercando di collaborare con un’agenzia turistica, per organizzare spettacoli dal vivo per noi. Inoltre, come ti ho detto prima, stiamo lavorando su nuovo materiale per iniziare presto la pre-produzione di un nuovo album.

Dai primi tre singoli d’anticipazione (‘Cold Comes The Night’, ‘Absence of Heaven’ e ‘Evoking the Μoon Goddess’), ho sentito che mantenete sempre il vostro buon gusto melodico, cogliendo alcune impressioni sonore di matrice svedese. Nelle nuove composizioni è, ovviamente, confluito anche il sound per il quale siete conosciuti, ma rivisto ai tempi attuali. Ad un ascolto attento si avvertono alcune note di freschezza compositiva, anche se l’impronta sonora è sempre quella fedele dei Deviser. Puoi raccontarmi come nasce una vostra composizione e da dove traete l’ispirazione?

I compositori principali sono anche i membri più anziani della band, fin dall’inizio, quindi è più facile suonare come dovremmo e vorremmo, davvero. Nick aveva idee davvero grandiose, quindi ho lasciato a lui tutto il lavoro di composizione per “Evil Summons Evil”. Di solito mi mostra la parte base di una canzone e poi ci lavoriamo per farla sembrare totalmente infernale e demoniaca. Ora, una canzone deve davvero darci inquietudine e odore di oscurità per permettere di coinvolgerci e finirla.

Che feedback state ricevendo circa la nuova musica di Deviser al momento?

Molte persone non hanno ancora capito. Questo ha senso dal momento che siamo scomparsi da così tanti anni. Ma quelli che hanno ascoltato il nuovo album concordano sul fatto che suona incredibile e farà una grande impressione. I nostri fans sono impazienti, ci dicono o ci scrivono che è finalmente arrivato il momento del nostro grande ritorno.

È già noto che per i testi delle canzoni, i Deviser prendono ispirazione da alcuni scrittori come HP Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard e Stephen King, senza farsi mancare contesti occulti. Cosa ti ispira principalmente e cosa ti affascina?

Di solito, cerco storie vere del passato che hanno creato scalpore allora e che sfidano la mia immaginazione su cui lavorare. Altre volte, guardando un film o leggendo un libro, nella mia mente si creano pensieri inquietanti e cerco di metterli in ordine, costruendo la struttura base di una traccia, e poi trasformandola in qualcosa di diabolico.

Il nuovo disco dei Deviser è pre-ordinabile in CD (Qui!) e in LP (Qui!)

Il nuovo album ‘Evil Summons Evil’ è prodotto da Psychon, chitarrista dei vostri connazionali Septic Flesh. Come è nata questa collaborazione?

Mentre cercavamo lo studio di registrazione giusto, il cantante dei SEPTICFLESH, Seth, ci ha suggerito Psychon, dicendoci che ha molto talento e che sarà enorme in futuro. Quanto aveva ragione! Subito, vedendo il suo lavoro in studio, abbiamo deciso di nominarlo nostro produttore. Un grande amico ora, un nostro fan da molto tempo, un artista dai molti talenti. Lavoreremo sicuramente di nuovo con lui.

Dopo così tanti anni, tornando con nuova musica, immagino che ci sarà un nuovo tour. Avete già alcune date certe? Pensi che passerete anche qui in Italia?

Non è stato ancora organizzato nulla, anche se abbiamo già delle offerte per i festival. Abbiamo bisogno di collaborare con un’agenzia di viaggi, in modo che possano occuparsi di tutto questo, e che possiamo concentrarci sulla nostra musica. Certo, organizzeremo qualcosa, un tour europeo per esempio, il prossimo inverno, con o senza un’agenzia.

Mi sono sempre chiesto l’origine del vostro nome. Da dove viene DEVISER? Cosa ti ha ispirato?

Ideatore (trad. Deviser, ndA), colui che escogita qualcosa di diverso. Erano gli anni in cui la maggior parte delle band sceglieva parole molto cattive come nome della band, io volevo qualcosa di diverso. Qualcosa di cui non mi sarei pentito in futuro, qualcosa che si sarebbe distinto.

I Deviser hanno iniziato come tua one-man band nel 1989, e sono diventati una vera e propria formazione nel 1993. Ad oggi vi siete mossi attraverso diversi album e concerti, con tutto ciò che ruota attorno a tali situazioni. Guardando indietro nel tempo fino ad oggi… C’è qualche particolare soddisfazione o rimpianto che vorresti condividere con chi legge questa intervista?

Ce ne sono così tanti! Certamente la nostra visita in Olanda per i concerti dopo l’uscita del nostro E.P. “The Revelation of Higher Mysteries” (del 1994, ndA), è stato un momento importante, essendo la terza band greca che ha fatto tournée all’estero fino ad allora. Anche la registrazione e l’uscita del nostro primo album, “Unspeakable Cults”. Molto importante per farci conoscere in tutta Europa, ricevere ottime recensioni, rilasciare innumerevoli interviste, conquistare fan fanatici. Sensazione incredibile.

Momenti tristi, quando al chitarrista solista del nostro secondo album è stata diagnosticata la schizofrenia dopo aver bevuto nell’antica Delos. O quando non avevamo un’agenzia di tour nel 1997, quindi potemmo fare un tour europeo solo perché DARK FUNERAL ci scelsero per unirci a loro. O quando fummo scelti per partecipare al Rockwave festival, nel 2002, insieme a SLAYER e JUDAS PRIEST, ma l’evento fu rimandato e annullato dalle autorità greche, non conoscendone ancora oggi i veri motivi.

Nella scena musicale Black Metal, nascono costantemente molte band. Alcuni sostengono che sia preoccupante e contro l’origine di “genere occulto per eletti”, altri pensano che sia un bene dare nuova vita al panorama. Inoltre, ci sono spesso controversie tra i conservatori del sound old school e coloro che preferiscono dare nuove influenze al genere musicale. Qual è la tua opinione sull’attuale scena black metal mondiale?

Domanda difficile a cui rispondere… Credo che i grandi gruppi del passato siano grandi ancora oggi. È buono e accettabile sperimentare questo genere, purché non sia fatto in modo ridicolo. Il Black Metal dovrebbe essere oscuro, empio e infestato. Ci sono alcune uscite interessanti di nuove band, al giorno d’oggi, ma penso che le band degli anni ’90 stiano ancora tirando le fila in questo genere.

Cosa ascolti oggi giorno?

Principalmente band che ho ascoltato in giovane età e che mi fecero una grande impressione all’epoca. Le prime uscite dei BATHORY rimangono diaboliche ancora oggi. Primi SLAYER, feeling insuperabile. I primi passi delle scene estreme norvegesi e greche. Ero molto attivo in quel momento… all’inizio di quelle scene. Ho vissuto tutto. Scambio di nastri, scrivevo per fanzine, scrivevo lettere a innumerevoli band underground in tutto il mondo, ecc… Ho anche colto l’esplosione del death metal e del grindcore, e più tardi anche del black metal. Tempi indimenticabili con autenticità e originalità.

C’è qualcosa riguardo al nuovo album e alla nuova strada dei Deviser che non ti ho chiesto e che vorresti dire?

Questo album, “Evil Summons Evil”, spezza davvero il collo! Mi dà i brividi. Suona così moderno ma senza rinunciare alle nostre radici. È molto diabolico con elementi intensi degli anni ’90.

Spesso, su Suoni Distorti Magazine facciamo domande folli, quando si avvicina la fine dell’intervista. Perché tra le varie cose serie, mettiamo sempre un po’ di ironia che non guasta mai. Se la musica di Deviser dovesse essere rappresentata da un piatto culinario, quale sarebbe? E perché?

Hmmm, difficile da immaginare. Forse qualcosa di senza tempo con un moderno approccio gourmet. Che ne dici di costolette di agnello alla griglia con salsa cremosa di barbabietole? In qualche modo oscuro, cotto nel fuoco primordiale che vomita l’inferno e soddisfa anche i più sofisticati…

Bene, sembra gustoso! Siamo giunti alla fine di questa interessante intervista. Mi ha fatto molto piacere averti potuto intervistare e mi ha fatto altrettanto piacere il vostro ritorno sulle scene. This year the greek black metallers Deviser are back on the scene 12 years after their last album. The band, led by Nick Christogiannis and founder Matt Hnaras, are set for the release of their new album ‘Evil Summons Evil’ – which will be available from February 10th via Hammerheart Records.

Since I’ve been listening to Deviser since their debut album, I was delighted to see them back on the scene, so I took advantage of Matt’s availability to ask him a few questions. And now, after 12 years of silence, there is definitely something to say…

Below is my conversation with a very kind Matt!

Welcome on Suoni Distorti Magazine. Thank you for allowing me this interview. How are you?

Hello, thank you! Quite busy answering interviews and working on new songs already!

The first question that spontaneously comes to mind concerns your absence from the music scene for a long time. What happened in these last years?

We were disappointed by these members who preferred to look at their personal lives instead of devoting themselves to the band. They were not willing to work actively and basically the band broke up for a few years. We had a full album as a demo from 2006, it was really a huge mistake to release it in 2011 on a very small independent label . This material was experimental and certainly does not represent us. We reactivated the band in 2017, me and Nick, with the release of an E.P. (“Howling flames”) and video clip (“Black mass”) and then things got serious since the new compositions sounded devilish, as we really wanted.

12 years after your last album (‘Seasons of Darkness’, 2011), you are now about to release the new record ‘Evil Summons Evil’ which will be released on February 10th, 2023. What news, if any, from the Deviser towards the fans?

The album that will be released in february is truly demonic and will satisfy fans of dark eerie metal. Currently we are looking to collaborate with a tour agency, to arrange live shows for us. Also, as I told you before, we are working on new material to start pre-production for a new album soon.

From the first three singles released in preview from the new album, I felt that you always keep your good melodic taste, picking up some Swedish sound impressions. In the new compositions merged, too, the sound for which you are known, but brought back to current times. Listening carefully, there are some notes of compositional freshness, even if the sonic imprint is always the faithful one of the Deviser. Can you tell me how a musical composition is born and where does the inspiration come from?

Now, the main composers are also the older members of the band , since the very beginning, so it’s easier to sound like as we really should and wanted to. Nick had really great ideas so I left all the composition work for “Evil summons evil” to him. Usually, he shows me the basic part of a song and then we work on it to make it sound totally hellish and demonic. Now, a song really has to give us creepiness and smell of darkness in order for us to engage with it and finish it.

What feedback are you getting for the new Deviser music at the moment?

A lot of people haven’t caught on, yet. This makes sense since we had disappeared for so many years. But those who have listen the new album agree that it sounds incredible and will make a big impression. Our fans are impatient, telling us or write that the time of our big comeback has finally arrived.

It is already known that for the lyrics of the songs, Deviser take inspiration from some writers such as HP Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard and Stephen King. But there is no shortage of occult contexts. What mainly inspires and what fascinates you?

Usually, I look for real stories of the past that created a sensation back then and that challenge my imagination to work on. Other times, watching a movie or reading a book, eerie thoughts are created in my mind and I try to put them in order, building the basic structure of a track, and then harnessing it into something diabolical.

The new album ‘Evil Summons Evil’ is produced by Psychon, guitarist of your compatriots Septic Flesh. How did this collaboration come about?

While looking for the right recording studio, SEPTICFLESH’s singer Seth suggested Psychon to us, telling us he has a lot of talent and will be huge in the future . How right he was! At once, seeing his work in the studio, we decided to make him our producer. A great friend now, a fan of ours since long ago, a multi-talented artist. We will definitely work with him again.

After so many years, you are coming back with new music, so I guess there will be a new tour. Do you already have some dates confirmed? Do you think you will also pass here in Italy?

Nothing has been arranged yet, although we already have offers for festivals. We need to collaborate with a tour agency, so that they can take care of all this, and that we can focus on our music. Sure, we ‘ll arrange something, a European tour for example, next winter, with or without a tour agency.

I’ve always wondered about the origin of your name. Where did “Deviser” come from? What inspired you?

Deviser, one who devises something different. Those were the years when most bands chose very evil words as their band name, I wanted something different. Something that I would not regret in the future, something that would stand out.

Deviser began as a one-man band in 1989, and became a full band in 1993. To date you have moved through several albums and live concerts, with everything revolving around these situations. Looking back in time to today. Is there any particular satisfaction or regret that you would like to share with anyone reading this interview?

There are so many! Certainly our visit to the Netherlands for concerts after the release of our E.P. “The revelation of higher mysteries”, was an important moment, being the third Greek band that toured abroad until then. The recording and release of our first album, too, “Unspeakable cults”. Very important for making us known throughout Europe, receiving excellent reviews, giving countless interviews, gaining fanatical fans. Incredible feeling.

Sad moments, when the lead guitarist of our second album was diagnosed with schizophrenia after drinking in ancient Delos. Or when we didn’t have a tour agency in 1997, so we could go on a European tour that DARK FUNERAL had chosen us to join them. Or when we were chosen to take part in Rockwave festival, in 2002, along with SLAYER and JUDAS PRIEST, but the event was postponed and cancelled by the Greek authorities, not knowing even today the real reasons.

In the black metal music scene, many bands are constantly being born. Some argue that it is worrying and against the origin of “occult genre for the elect”, others think it is good to give new life to the scene. Furthermore, there are often disputes between conservatives of the old school sound and those who prefer to give new influences to the musical genre. What is your opinion on the current worldwide black metal scene?

Hard question to answer… I believe the great bands of the past are still great nowadays. It is good and acceptable to have experiments in this genre, as long as it is not done in a ridiculous way. Black metal should be dark, unholy and haunted. There are some interesting releases from new bands, nowadays, but I think the bands from the ‘90s are still pulling the strings in this genre.

What are you listening to nowadays?

Mainly bands I listened to at a young age which had made a great impression on me at the time. The first releases of BATHORY remain diabolical even today. Early SLAYER, unsurpassed feeling. The first steps of the Norwegian and Greek extreme scenes. I was very active at that time in the beginning of those scenes. I lived it all. Tape trading, I used to write for fanzines, writing letters to countless underground bands globally, etc. I also caught the explosion of death metal and grind core, and later black metal, too. Unforgettable times with authenticity, originality.

Is there anything about Deviser’s new album and new road that I haven’t asked you and what would you like to say?

This album, “Evil summons evil” really breaks necks! It gives me chills. It sounds so modern but without renouncing our roots. It’s very diabolical with intense elements from the ‘90s.

Often, on Suoni Distorti Magazine we ask crazy questions, when the end of the interview is approaching. Because among the various serious things, we always insert a little irony which never hurts. If Deviser’s music had to be represented by a dish… what would yours be? And why?

Hmmm, hard to imagine. Perhaps something timeless with a modern gourmet approach. What about bbq Greek lamb chops with creamy beetroot sauce ? Somehow dark, cooked in primordial fire that spews hell and satisfies even the most sophisticated ones…

We have come to the end of this interesting interview. I was very pleased to have been able to interview you and I was really pleased with your return to the scene.
