Mike LePond, talentuoso bassista dei Symphony X, nonché compositore e fondatore del progetto Mike LePond’s Silent Assassins, con il quale ha prodotto il suo primo album (recensione qui). Un uomo gentile, un artista completo, è protagonista dell’intervista che segue…

Ciao Mike, ben ritrovato su Suoni Distorti Magazine e grazie per aver accettato questa intervista.

Piacere mio,contento di farla.

Da sempre Maestro del basso per i Symphony X e, successivamente nel tuo side project Mike LePond’s Silent Assassins. Come e quando nasce la tua passione per la Musica e per il basso ,in particolare?

All’età di 13 anni, mio padre mi portò a vedere i KISS al MSG a New York. Fui colpito dal concerto. Ho visto Gene Simmons come se sputasse fuoco, sangue e volasse nell’aria. Dopo lo show, decisi di voler diventare una rock star proprio come lui.

A quanti anni hai comprato il tuo primo basso?

Subito dopo questo concerto dei KISS, mio padre mi comprò il mio primo basso. Presi lezioni per un anno e dopo il mio primo obiettivo fu quello di imparare ogni canzone dei KISS prodotta fino ad allora. Raggiunsi il mio obiettivo.

 Ben cinque album con i Symphony X. Qual è quello che senti più vicino al tuo stile e al tuo animo?

Sì, ho registrato 5 album con i Symphony X. Penso che il mio preferito sia il nuovo intitolato ‘Underworld’. Penso che ogni canzone sia ottima e tanto divertente da suonare sul palco.

untitled‘Mike Lepond’s Silen Assassin’ è il primo album omonimo di questo tuo progetto. Ha un songwriting molto interessante. Perchè questa scelta?

Il mio primo amore è sempre stato l’Heavy Metal classico e ho sempre voluto fare un album su questo stile.Quando i Symphony X erano in tour negli USA e in Europa per promuovere l’album ‘Iconoclast’,ho finalmente avuto l’occasione di scrivere tutta la musica e i testi.

 Mentre, per quanto riguarda la scelta e la collaborazione con gli altri componenti?

Ho preferito collaborare con musicisti locali, così da poter essere in studio con loro per le registrazioni. Ho riunito i migliori talenti trovati vicino al luogo dove vivo, il New Jersey, negli USA. Grazie alle loro brillanti performances, il risultato è stato un formidabile album heavy metal.

Un momento imbarazzante o divertente durante un tour o un live?

Di solito i momenti divertenti o imbarazzanti si hanno nell’ultimo giorno del tour. Facciamo scherzi alle altre band o loro li fanno a noi quando siamo sul palco.

Novità sul secondo album MLSA? So che la pubblicazione è prevista per Ottobre, o sbaglio

Momentaneamente non ho una data precisa, ma mi piacerebbe che il prossimo album uscisse a Marzo 2017. Il titolo del prossimo album dei MLSA sarà ‘Pawn and Prophecy’ e sarà dello stesso stile del precedente. La title track durerà ben 21 minuti.

Come nasce una traccia MLSA?

I brani di MLSA vengono assemblati come un puzzle o mosaico. Ho diverse idee musicali e diverse idee per i testi che ho scritto durante gli anni. Compongo le parole con qualsiasi musica che riesca a catturare il suo mood.

In questi giorni sei in tour con i Symphony X, ma come ricordi il tuo ingresso nella band?

Lo ricordo benissimo, ho incontrato la band tramite un amico in comune. Ho dovuto sostenere due audizioni difficilissime prima che mi fosse chiesto di entrare a far parte della band. Il mio primo live con i Symphony X fu a Sao Paulo Brazil nel 2000.

Il tuo primo live da spettatore?

Il primissimo fu quello dei KISS a New York City, appunto.

E, invece, le emozioni provate durante il tuo primissimo live con una band?

Proprio il primo come membro ufficiale con i Symphony X a Sao Paulo Brazil nel 2000. E’ stata un’esperienza che non dimenticherò mai. E’ stata la prima volta ripagata da un grande pubblico che potesse cantare le nostre canzoni con noi.

Grazie a tutti i nostri fans per il loro amore e supporto. Vi voglio bene e vi vedrò presto in tour.

Hi Mike,welcome on SDM again and thank you for accepting this interview.

My pleasure, I am happy to do it.

You’re an endless bass Master  in Symphony X and in your MikeLePond Silent Assassins’s side project. How and when was born your passion for Music and for the bass guitar in particular?

When I was 13 years old, my father took me to see KISS at Madison Square Garden in New York City. I was amazed by the concert. I watched Gene Simmons as he breathed fire, Spit blood and flew through the air. After that show I decided that I wanted to be a rock star just like him.

How many years ago you has bought  your first bass?

Immediately after that KISS show my father bought me my first bass. I took lessons for one year after that and my first goal was to learn every KISS song that was released up to that time. I achieved my goal.

Five albums with Symphony X. Which is  that is  next to your style and your soul?

Yes I have recorded 5 albums with Symphony X. I think my favorite one has to be our newest one called Underworld. I think every song is great and a lot fun to play on stage.

MLSA is the first namesake  album and songwriting is very interesting. Why this choice about songs?

My first love has always been classic heavy metal and I always wanted to release an album in the style. When Symphony X was touring the USA and Europe supporting our album “Iconoclast”, I finally had the chance to write all the music and lyrics.

So, what about the others members choice and collaboration?

I wanted all the members to be local so I could be in the recording studio with them. I assembled the best talent I could find from where I live in New Jersey, USA. Thanks to their brilliant performances, the result was a kick ass heavy metal album.

A funny moment or a embarrassing moment on the road or on live stage?

Usually the funniest moments happen on the last day of a tour. We might play pranks on the other bands or they might do something to us when we are on stage.

News about MLSA ‘s second album? I know the release will be in October, isn’t?

I currently do not have a release date, but I would like to release the next one in March, 2017. The name of the next MSLA will be called “Pawn and Prophecy”, and will be in the same style as the first one.The title track is 21 minute song.

How it grows a MLSA track?

MSLA songs are put together like a jigsaw puzzle. I have various musical ideas and various lyrical ideas that I have written over the years. I match the lyrics to what ever music can capture their mood.

In these days you’re in tour with Symphony X ,but how do you remember  your  entry in Symphony X for the first time?

Yes I remember this very well, I met the band through a mutual friend. I had to endure two very difficult auditions before I was asked to join the band. My first show with Symphony X was in Sao Paulo Brazil in the year 2000.

So,which were the emotions  proved  in your first band live?

My first show as a member of Symphony X was in Sao Paulo Brazil in the year 2000. It was an experience I will never forget. It was the first time I ever payed to a huge crowd of people that could sing all our songs back to us.
