Intervista con la “metal goddes” Sonia Anubis (Burning Witches, Sepiroth)
Non potevo non farlo. Intervistare una giovanissima (20 anni), bellissima e super talentuosa musicista, chitarrista del gruppo femminile del momento, le Burning Witches, nonché bassista di una band death con i controglioni è stato un vero e proprio piacere.
Quando la nostra Sonia Anubis mi ha confermato l’intervista non mi sono lasciata sfuggire l’occasione, anche perché la seguivo già da abbastanza tempo… e personalmente, in qualità di ragazza, davanti ad un’altra ragazza con un tale curriculum non si può che non provare ammirazione. Conosciamola meglio insieme!

Ciao Sonia! Benvenuta innanzitutto su Suoni Distorti. Grazie mille per avermi dato l’opportunità di intervistarti. Posso confidarti che sono una tua grande fan, anche se questo forse lo sapevi già. Come stai??
Grazie mille ragazzi! Molto bene dai, al momento sto scrivendo musica ed il sole fuori sta splendendo.
Onestamente non so davvero da dove iniziare con te! Forse prima penso che sia opportuno presentarti a coloro che non ti conoscono. Suoni la chitarra nelle famosissime Burning Witches, la band svizzera tutta al femminile che fa heavy/power metal, ed il basso con i danesi Sepiroth che invece fanno brutal death. Sei una famosa youtuber, riduttivo definirti virtuosa musicista, nonchè endorser per la Jackson. Ho detto tutto? Mado’. Beh, scontato forse chiedertelo, quando hai iniziato a suonare la chitarra? E riguardo al basso che mi dici?
Ho iniziato a suonare il basso 6 anni fa e la chitarra esattamente un anno dopo. Non ho preso lezioni, sono autodidatta. Caspita, sei davvero molto brava per aver cominciato abbastanza recentemente. Perchè “Anubis”? Personalmente sono innamorata dell’Egitto e della sua storia (sono tra l’altro di ritorno da un viaggio fra l’Egitto ed il nord del Sudan) quindi sono abbastanza curiosa riguardo a questo tuo soprannome e ai due occhi che ti dipingi sulle mani durante gli show.
Wow, mi piacerebbe un sacco andare lì, non sono mai stata in Egitto, vedremo in futuro… Per un periodo ho avuto una vera e propria ossessione per la mitologia e la storia Egizia. E personalmente l’esperienza live la vivo come se fosse un vero e proprio rituale (Anubis è la divinità egiziana dei morti a cui è affidato lo stesso cerimoniale della morte) in questo modo mi sento personificata in lui. I due occhi che di solito mi dipingo sul dorso della mano riguardano invece Horus che rappresenta invece la protezione e dal momento in cui me li sento addosso so che mi infonde una sensazione di sicurezza e di completezza durante i live. Tutto questo diventa parte di ciò che suono. E non posso proprio iniziare uno show senza di loro. Stessa cosa vale per la mano di Fatima, un altro amuleto simbolo di protezione. Si, sono una persona abbastanza superstiziosa haha.
Beh dai, lo sono abbastanza anche io. Parliamo ora delle Burning Witches, di ritorno da un emozionante tour europeo. Come è andata? Ti ricordi in particolare qualche show o qualche pubblico?
E’ stata un’esperienza strabiliate e spero di viverne ancora di questo tipo in futuro. Essere in grado di suonare davanti a così tanti diversi tipi di pubblico è tutto quello che avevo sempre sognato e sperato da quanto ho iniziato a suonare. Ed è un qualcosa di emozionante quando le persone si divertono con la musica che crei e suoni insieme alla tua band. Il mio pubblico preferito di questo tour è stato quello in Svizzera dello Z7 di Pratteln e quello di Barcellona. Ho visto un sacco di tuoi video su youtube dove suoni la chitarra… sei incredibile!!! Personalmente sono una grande fan di Chuck Schuldiner, indiscutibilmente uno dei più grandi chitarristi di tutti i tempi e penso proprio che anche a te piacciano i Death perchè ho visto due tue cover! Chi è il tuo chitarrista preferito? Hai qualche guru nel metal o ti senti ispirata da qualcuno in particolare?
Oh yeah! Chuck Schuldiner era e rimarrà sempre un chitarrista leggendario. Eterna fonte di ispirazione per così tanti musicisti con la meravigliosa musica che ci ha lasciato. E personalmente non sarò mai stanca di riascoltarmi la discografia dei Death. Complessivamente ho fatto 5 loro cover, 3 con la chitarra e 2 con il basso. Il mio chitarrista preferito è di sicuro è Tony Macalpine, le sue melodie sono di un altro livello. Ma le persone che mi hanno convinto a prendere in mano uno strumento sono stati Gene Simmons per il basso e Marty Friendman per la chitarra.
Sepiroth: sei cazzutissima durante i live! (come facevo a rendere il cazzutissima in english ahah?!) Quali sono le tue band preferite death metal? Il tuo album invece? Sei una di quelle classiche persone che pensa che il death sia morto dopo gli anni novanta?
Le mie band preferite sono i Suffocation, gli Asphyx, i Morbid Angel, i Soreption ed i First Fragment. L’album è di sicuro “Pierced from Within” dei Suffocation. Ma ce ne sono tanti… E no, non sono quel tipo di persona. Il Death non è morto di certo con gli anni novanta. Ci sono un’infinità di album fichi che sono usciti in questo secolo ed altrettante moderne band death in attività che stanno registrando album interessanti. Personalmente apprezzo molto sia il brutal che il technical death ed entrambi questi generi hanno interessanti album registrati nell’ultimo periodo, nonostante certe pietre miliari rimangano chiaramente proprie degli anni novanta.
Oltre al fatto d’essere una brava musicista sei pure bellissima. E sappiamo perfettamente quanto questo possa essere un “problema” per una ragazza. Il mondo è pieno di haters, specialmente donne nei confronti di altre donne. Che cosa ne pensi riguardo quelle persone che son mosse dall’invidia o dalla gelosia? Ti sei mai sentita attaccata da qualcuno in particolare? Come ti sei difesa?
Innanzitutto grazie mille. Penso che siamo un po’ tutte gelose a volte, c’ho avuto a che fare anche io, ma è un qualcosa di abbastanza umano. La cosa migliore da fare rimane sempre quella di concentrare la propria attenzione e le proprie energie nel migliorare sè stesse, sbarazzandosi delle proprie insicurezze. Eccellere nella propria passione non è una competizione con qualcun altro! Ho imparato inoltre a distinguere l’odio e l’astio dalle critiche costruttive, anche prendendo in considerazione chi ne è il mittente. Cerco sempre di ignorare l’odio gratuito e di migliorare mè stessa grazie ai suggerimenti.
Riguardo invece la mancanza di rispetto verso una donna che suona è un qualcosa davvero che non riesco a tollerare. Non importa che tu sia maschio o femmina, ognuno di noi a questo mondo merita di essere trattato in modo rispettoso. Sostengo fortemente la parità degli standard e di trattamento aldilà del genere, della razza o dell’etnia. Alla fine le differenze ci rendono unici nella nostra identità, ed è proprio per questo che il mondo è così bello!
Ora dimmi. Perchè una ragazza dovrebbe suonare uno strumento?
Per me suonare la chitarra è una via di fuga dalla realtà, e penso che lo possa essere anche per gli altri! E’ un qualcosa di terapeutico che ti permette di dimenticare tutte le cose brutte e di liberare i tuoi demoni interiori trasformando il tutto in vibrazioni positive. Praticamente tutto ciò che è bloccato dentro di te può uscire come riff o melodia! Suonare uno strumento ti consente di esprimere la tua arte.
Quali sono i tuoi obiettivi futuri? Hai anche un sogno? Ed i tuoi piani? Sì, siamo curiosi!
Ho troppi obiettivi o sogni per scriverli tutti qui, eccone alcuni: pubblicare musica per diversi progetti e band in cui sto lavorando o su cui sto lavorando. Diventare una persona ed una musicista migliore. Fare MOLTI spettacoli in tutto il mondo. In particolare mi piacerebbe molto suonare od organizzare un tour in America con una delle mie band. Mi piacerebbe condividere il palco con il mio ragazzo o una delle mie band preferite.
Ed io cara Sonia non posso che farti il migliore degli in bocca al lupo, dal profondo del cuore. Grazie per l’intervista, ci vedremo a qualche concerto!

Hi Sonia! Welcome to Suoni Distorti Magazine. Thank you so much for the interview. As girl I can say that I am a big fan of yours (and you know it haha). How you doing girl? Thank you very much for having me! I’m am doing great, been writing some music today and the sun is shining.
Honestly I don’t know where to start with you! First let me introduce you to all the people who don’t know you. You play guitar in the amazing all-female Swiss power-metal band called Burning Witches, and bass guitar in Sepiroth, a Dutch brutal death metal band; you are a famous youtuber, Endorser for Jackson guitars and such a great performer So here we go. When did you start to play guitar? And what about bass I did start playing bass 6 years ago, and guitar a year later actually (so 5 years ago). I am self-taught musician.
Why “Anubis”? I love so much Egypt and I am into Egyptian history (I’m back from an unforgettable trip around Egypt and North Sudan) so I’m curious about your name and about the two eyes you are used to paint over your hands during performances. Wow, I would LOVE to travel there, I have never been in Egypt! I hope in the future. I have for a long time a weird obsession with Egyptian mythology and history. I personally experience being onstage as a ritual (Anubis is the Egyptian deity that performs the ritual of the dead), this onstage ritual I personify myself as Anubis. The eyes on my hands are the eyes of Horus, which represent protection, since I’ve been painting these on my hands from the very beginning it gives me a feeling of security and completeness when I play, it’s become a part of me when i play live. I can’t without them. Also, the fact that it’s eyes on hands is also the same idea as the hand of Fatima (hamsa) which is also a superstitious belief of protection. I am a quite superstitious person, haha.
Burning Witches: back from an amazing european tour. How was it? Some show or some crowd you remember as well? It was an absolutely mind-blowing experience, and I hope to have a LOT more of it in the future. Being able to play in front of a different crowd is nothing else that what I dreamed and wished for when starting as a musician. It’s an amazing feeling when people enjoy the music you play with your band. My favourite crowds of the tour were the one on Z7 venue in Pratteln (Zwitserland), and the one in Barcelona.
I’ve seen so many youtube video of you where you play guitar, and wow you are so unbelieveble!! I am a big fans of the most amazing guitar player of all time, the legendary Chuck Schuldiner, and I think you like Death too cause I’ve seen two Death covers! Which is your favourite guitar player? Do you have some metal guru or are you inspired by someone in particular? Oh yeah! Chuck Schuldiner was and always will be a big legend. He still inspires so many musicians with the wonderful music he left in this world. I will never get tired of the Death discography. I made a total of 5 Death cover’s, 3 on guitar and 2 on bass. My most favourite guitar player is shred god Tony Macalpine, his melodies are out of this universe. But, the persons that inspired me to pick up an instrument were for bass Gene Simmons and for guitar Marty Friedman.
Sepiroth: you have a really aggressive attitude with them on stage! Your favourite death metal bands? Your favourite death metal album? Are you that kind of person who thinks that death metal is dead after the 90s? My favourite death metal bands are Suffocation, Asphyx, Morbid Angel, Soreption and First Fragment. My favourite death metal album might be Pierced from Within by Suffocation. But it really differs. NO, I am not that kind of person. Death metal did not die after the 90s. There are countless amazing albums that did come out in this century. And many active modern death metal bands that release great music. I personally have a big appreciation for both brutal and technical death, and these both genres do have a lot of great releases these years. But of course in the 90s many masterpieces have been released.
You are both a great musician and such a beautiful girl at the same time. And sometimes this could be a problem for a girl. The world is full of haters, especially women for a woman. What do you think about those girls who are jealous to others? Have you ever felt stuck by others and how did you deal with it? Thank you so much. We all have been or are jealous sometimes, I struggled with it too, it’s human. But the best is to try to focus more on improving yourself or get rid of your insecurities. Becoming better in your passion is not a competition against someone! I learnt to separate hate from constructive criticism, also looking at who is the person that says it. When it someone I trust then I know it’s no nonsense what this person says. I try to ignore the hate, and try to do something about the constructive criticism. Regarding hate and disrespect towards female musicians, this is something I don’t tolerate. No matter what gender you are, everyone on this world deserves to be treated in a respectful way. I am for equal standards and equal treatment not matter what gender, race or ethnicity. Differences make us unique individuals, and that’s what makes this world exciting to live in!
Why a girl should start playing an instrument? Playing guitar for me is like escaping from reality, and I think it can have the same effect on other people! It works therapeutic and makes you forget the bad things. It allows you to release your inner demons and express also the positive vibes. Basically anything that is stuck inside you can get out as a riff or a melody! Playing an instrument allows you to express your art.
What are your future goals? Do you have a dream as well? and what about your plans? Yes, we are curious. I have way too many goals or dreams to name on here, here are some of them: Release music for several projects and bands that i’m in or working on. Become a better person and musician. Play MANY shows around the world. Specifically I would LOVE to play or tour in America with one of my bands. I would love to share the stage with my boyfriend or any of my favourite bands.
